Summer Continuing Education Series

Three Interactive Workshops for Mediation Skill Development

Join for one, two, or all three workshops in this series to deepen your mediation skill and practice.

Workshop 1 - Through the Looking Glass: Supporting client communication through reflection and reframing - Tuesday, July 15 5:30-7:30 pm EST

As mediators, our most powerful tool for supporting our clients is our ability to hold a mirror up to their communication. We listen actively to their words, as well as the emotions, subtext, and context they imply. We listen to understand without judgement, building trust as our clients lower their defenses. And by shifting the language from blaming to constructive, our clients can start to see a path to a better, brighter future. In this interactive workshop we will spend time exploring and practicing the skills of Reflection and Reframing in a supportive and encouraging environment.

Workshop 2 - Stuck in the Muck: Effective Approaches to Impasse - Tuesday, July 22 5:30-7:30 pm EST

As mediators we want to help people find an effective resolution to their conflict, and it can feel frustrating when parties seem stuck in their positions or unable to move past impasse. How do we effectively support our clients when they are stuck? What interventions can we use to help parties move forward without stepping outside our role as mediators? During this interactive workshop we will explore our experiences of impasse, and practice tools to effectively generate movement while remaining impartial and supporting party self-determination.

Workshop 3 - Putting it All Together: Role play practice and roundtable - Tuesday, July 29 5:30-7:30 pm EST

When it comes to mediation, the proof really is in the practice. Together we will apply the tools of Reflection, Reframing, and Effective Approaches to Impasse in simulated role play practice, with discussion and feedback throughout.
